Teaching with The Case Method

The Case method is currently utilized in a large number of contexts and subjects, sometimes in the form of singular occurrences in a course, in other cases as a more overarching didactic method stretching through a whole course or educational programme.

It is quite common to use specially published 3rd-party Case material, while there is at the same time a growing demand for Cases that are adapted to a specific curriculum and the professed learning outcomes of a course or programme. A teacher can utilize his/her experience and knowledge to produce Case material linked to the theoretical basis of the subject and educational programme, and thus connect this with active analysis and action in a more clear and active fashion.

Target Group

University teachers and other staff with teaching duties at Uppsala University interested in introducing the Case method in his/her teaching and learning activities and developing skills in creating Case material and leading and assessing Case seminars.

A maximum of 24 participants can be enrolled in the course on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scope

The course is the equivalent of two working weeks, which includes two full session days, three half-day sessions and a number of online meetings for supervision and peer review.
Please note that your presence and participation during the first scheduled course session is mandatory in all courses arranged by the unit, unless otherwise stated.

Format

Short lectures, Case-seminars and group discussions, exercises in creative writing, peer review and constructive feedback. A number of course sessions are online, which demands access to a computer with basic video meeting functions as well as a headset with microphone.

Course language

The course language will vary between courses, being either primarily Swedish or primarily English (presentation material etc.). Which language is the primary in a specific course shall be explicit in the particular course title when it is open for application. Participants are however free to produce Case material in a language that is appropriate for one´s own teaching and learning activities, and there can be some adaptation to Swedish/English independent of the particular course language at the time.

Course goals

The aim of the course is to introduce you to the foundations and goals of the Case method, to support you in producing Case material that is appropriate for your own subject and to arrange and lead teaching and learning activities based on the Case method.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to:

• Develop your knowledge on the theoretical basis, utility and goals of the Case method
• Evaluate the utility of the Case method in relation to application in your own subject and to student learning
• Develop strategies for using the Case method in your own teaching and learning activities
• Develop your ability to create Case material that supports inclusive teaching and stimulates student learning
• Analyse and provide constructive feedback on other course participant´s Case material
• Evaluate your own Case material
• Select and apply appropriate assessment methods in relation to the Case method and material
• Plan and execute a Case seminar session, provide constructive feedback on other course participant´s arranged sessions

After end-of-course, and when all assignments are completed and approved, the participant will receive a certificate.

Financial conditions

The course is free of charge for staff members affiliated with Uppsala University.

The following applies for all courses given by the Unit for Academic Teaching and Learning: If a course participant is unable to complete a course within the given time frame, all elements / assignments must be completed within three years from the start of the course in order to receive a passing grade / certificate of completion. The prerequisite for this is that course information and course objectives are the same.
