Most of us take being able to talk for granted, and rarely think about how we actually use our voice to do so. Your voice needs to last throughout your life – through colds and stress, and during long periods of use. You also need to talk in a way that allows you to be heard and understood. In many ways, your voice helps shape your message, with its quality, strength, tone, tempo, and variation. It is easily affected by attitudes and emotions such as nervousness, stress or confidence.

In this workshop, we will look at how various aspects of a voice can affect how a listener will interpret what is said. We will talk about people’s associations with voices that sound shrill, boring, monotonous, or creaky, and how vocal behavior can strengthen or weaken both the message and the listener’s confidence in the speaker. There are plenty of expressions that describe how a voice can sound, and we often go so far as to assume that the voice tells us what the speaker is like as a person.
