A deep approach to doctoral supervision

Would you like to broaden your mind as a research supervisor? Do you think that you have been at it for quite some time now supervising doctoral students? Would you like to get familiarized with tools that are really effective? Any desire to take on a new approach to your supervision? If so, taking a set of seminars entitled “A Deep Approach to Doctoral Supervision” could be recommended.

This course is aimed at

  • Docent
  • Research supervisor

Topic

  • Pedagogy

The Division for Quality Enhancement at Uppsala University offers a series of six independent seminars running each study year. The series corresponds to Module 2b in a capacity development and furthering training programme for supervisors active at Uppsala University.

Target Group

This series of seminars targets experienced doctoral supervisors (above all, associate profes-sors/docents and full professors) but also doctoral supervisors who have taken “Supervising PhD Students” (Module 2a, provided by the Division), as well as some shorter doctoral supervisor training course offered at Faculty level.

Extent and Teaching Qualifications

Every seminar is given independently and corresponds to half-a-day on campus and half-a-day´s work off-campus (e.g., reading an article or part of a book in preparation for the seminar).

That said, it will be possible for you to single out and take any seminar of interest at your own convenience, in due course of time.

A Certificate of Completion will be issued when a participant has taken a total of five independent seminars. A certificate is given after another five seminars.

This set of seminars aims at partly giving international and national perspectives on the doctoral supervisor´s views of supervision and research education, partly making it possible for particip-ants from different subject areas, faculties and departments to share interdisciplinary ideas of doctoral supervision, partly promoting the professional development of the doctoral supervisor, including the ability to make self-reflections.

Teaching and Learning Activities

Presentations by invited speakers (subject-specific experts) in combination with group discus-sions, exercises and peer conversations between and among the participants. The seminars are going to facilitate active participation.

Course Dates

Seminar 3, May 30, 09.00-12.00

The workshop is in Swedish, Campus Blåsenhus

The main language of the seminar will be Swedish but participants may use English for questions and their own contributions.

Together we will explore what causes friction and conflicts in supervision as well as what our experiences are and what strategies might be use when cooperation runs less than smoothly.

Taking a point of departure in the experiences of the participants, together with Anna Westin and Rabbe Hedengren from the Career and Leadership Development Centre, we will reflect together and explore possible starting points and perspectives to facilitate a conflict situation.

Last day to sign in is May 24.

For course dates, see Calendar.

Financial Conditions

The number of participants is restricted to 15. The seminars are free of charge for staff members affiliated with Uppsala University.

Convenor

Cesar Pay Gómez from the Division for Quality Enhancement, Academic teaching and Learning will be convening the seminars.
