Sociology of Education

The sociology of education explores education - in the broad sense of the word - with the help of methods in social sciences, connecting it to other social phenomena and transformations, such as changes in the labour market and globalisation.

A particular focus is on the relationship between pupils', students' and teachers' social and cultural assets, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the order that prevails in the education system, as well as on individuals' and social groups' educational strategies.

An interconnected area is the historical and present development of educational institutions and their traditions, and how education is related to careers and hierarchies in various social fields, such as economy, culture or politics. The sociology of education is founded on more general traditions in sociology, history and cultural studies.
