Comparative Literature

Literary studies provides you with an opportunity to develop your knowledge of literature from ancient times to the present, and of the conditions for literature and writers in society. Literary studies also gives students theoretical and methodological tools for analysing various forms of literary texts and for understanding literary communication. During the courses, students are trained in oral and written communication.

The basic courses encompass two academic semesters. The basic level includes the study of ancient and modern literature, the history of literature and literary communication, as well as literary theory and method. One of the courses at the B-level includes writing exercises, and the writing of short academic papers is compulsory at both levels. Level A and B can be followed by the C-level, where students write an extensive scholarly paper. Literary studies is also one orientation within the Master Programme in the Humanities.

Research activities at the Department of Literature are oriented towards ancient as well as modern literature, towards the development of ideas and literary forms, gender studies, and literature and society. Sociology of Literature and Rhetoric are two fields of expertise at the department.
