PEP partners

In the PEP project six West African universities and two European universities work together.

University Joseph Ki-Zerbo (UJKZ), Burkina Faso

UJKZ is the first and largest university of Burkina Faso. Created in 1974 as University of Ougadougou, it was the main provider of human and technical resources for the creation of the other seven universities in the country. To cope with the swelling of students and the lack of adequate infrastructure, this university was divided into two universities in 2007.

Currently UJKZ has more than 65,000 students divided into five faculties and six institutes hosting 1,160 teacher-researchers including 649 permanent staff.

University Nazi Boni (UNB), Burkina Faso

UNB is the second university in the country, located in Bobo Dioulasso about 380 km from the capital Ouagadougou. Created in 1995, this university was during its first two years a polytechnic center under the administrative and pedagogical responsibility of the University of Ouagadougou (currently UJKZ) before being transformed into a university in 1997.

UNB now has about 50,000 students and 200 researchers. It has four faculties and four training institutes.

University of Galway, Ireland

Establishing in 1845, University of Galway has grown significantly in size and reputation over the past 175 years, with a student population today of over 18,000 including over 2,000 international students.

University of Galway has a growing international reputation based on the quality of our teaching and the global impact of our research and is ranked 259 in the world according to QS rankings.

Université de San-Pedro (USP), Ivory Coast

USP is a public university and was founded in 2021. It is built to host 20,000 students.

USP has four Training and Research Units (UFR)1:

  • The UFR Agriculture, Fisheries Resources and Agro-industry to meet the need for human resources in the country's major industries.
  • The UFR Marine Sciences to train highly qualified students in the fields of oceanography, marine resources and literal sciences.
  • The UFR Logistics, Tourism, Hospitality and Catering to meet the challenge of qualifying personnel in the Ivorian tourism sector and supporting the nation´s ambition to become the 5th African tourist destination by 2025.
  • The UFR Health Sciences for the training of general practitioners.

The university also has a Preparatory Class for Grandes Écoles (CPGE): Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Sciences (MPSI) and two engineering schools, notably the School of Building and Public Works Engineers and the School of Engineers in Shipbuilding.

Institut National Polytechnique Felix Houphouet-Boigny (INPHB), Ivory Coast

INPHB was founded in 1996. It is named after Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the country's first president.

INPHB consists of the following écoles supérieures (schools for higher learning/advanced training):

  • École Supérieure d’Agronomie (ESA, ‘School for Advanced Training in Agronomy).
  • École Supérieure d’Industrie (ESI, ‘Industry’): for computer science, mechanics and chemistry.
  • École Supérieure de Commerce et d’Administration des Entreprises (ESCAE, ‘Business Studies and Management’): also for marketing and insurance.
  • École Supérieure des Mines et de Géologie (ESM, ‘Mining and Geology’): also for petroleum extraction/processing, and water treatment.
  • École Supérieure des Travaux Publics (ESTP, ‘Public Works’): for civil engineering.

In addition, there are the:

  • École de Formation Continue et de Perfectionnement des Cadres (EFCPC, ‘Continuing Education and Management Development School’), and
  • École doctorale polytechnique (EDP), a doctoral school.

Université des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines de Bamako (ULSHB), Mali

Founded in 2011, ULSHB is one of the five public Malian universities. It has two faculties and two institutes: Faculty of Languages and Communication, Faculty of Human Sciences, Institute of Technology and a Confucius Institute.

Today ULSHB has 22,640 (including 6,925 female) students.

Université des Sciences, des Techniques et des Technologies de Bamako (USTTB), Mali

USTTB is a public university and was founded in 2011. Today it has 15,917 students on “Licence, Master, Doctorat” (Bachelor, Master, PhD) level, and 610 staff.

USTBB has four faculties :

  • Faculty of Science and Technology (FST)
  • Faculty of Medicine and Odontostomatology (FMOS)
  • Faculty of Pharmacy (FAPH)
  • Institute of Applied Sciences (ISA)

Uppsala University (UU), Sweden

UU was founded in 1477, making it the oldest university in the Nordic countries with a living cultural environment and fantastic student life. There are 53,000 students at Uppsala University and 6,500 employees. The university has a strong research focus, to which all nine faculties contribute within both pure research as well as within innovations.

There are three units collaborating in this project:

  1. The Division for Internationalisation was created in 2019 to strengthen the university’s internationalisation process. It has two unit, one focused on international mobility, one focused on international collaboration projects. The latter one – the Unit for Global Partnership – is responsible for Erasmus+ KA2 projects. The team is leading 5 CBHE projects (EMISHA, EVENT, LISTO, EASTEM, VAMOS) as the coordinator and is managing UU’s contributions to 10 CBHE projects in which UU is one of the EU partners. UU Global will provide the project leader of PEP.
  2. The Unit for Professional English (UPE) is a unit within the Department of English at Uppsala University, created in 2016 specifically to support Uppsala University staff and doctoral students in improving their English proficiency. UPE offers staff training in English proficiency for academic and administrative professionals. UPE will be in charge of English teacher training in PEP.
  3. The International Science Programme (ISP) provides long-term funding, coordination and mentoring to research groups and regional scientific networks at universities and research institutes in low and lower-middle income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The ISP model builds on Support to institutionally based research groups and regional scientific networks (not individuals), Long-term support (decades) to enable capacity building and self-sustainability; The establishment of research links between supported groups and better equipped host research groups abroad (regionally or internationally). ISP will support PEP with its network in West African and help with mainstreaming and sustaining the results.
