Erasmus grant for traineeships outside the EU
Within the Erasmus+ programme you can recive a grant to conduct a traineeship outside the EU. The grant can, for instance, fund the collection of data for an independent project at a company, organisation, or university. An independent project could be an internship course, a thesis project, a C-, D-, or master's thesis, or a doctoral dissertation. The key requirement is that your department has approved the activity as relevant to your studies. Volunteer work is not eligible for funding.
Ways in which you can participate in an Erasmus traineeship outside the EU:
- Within the framework of a traineeship course at Uppsala University
- Within the framework of a degree project or thesis
Who can apply for the grant?
To be eligible for an Erasmus traineeship, the following criteria must be met:
- You must be studying with the intention of obtaining a degree at Uppsala University, whether it be at the undergraduate, master's, or doctoral level.
- You must have successfully completed at least 60 credits of university studies. Credits from other universities or HEIs can be included in these 60 credits.
- You are registered at Uppsala University when you apply.
- You have arranged a traineeship that has been approved by your department and it must be relevant to your studies and your future career.
- The organisation where the traineeship will take place is approved.
- The traineeship is full-time for the full time of the traineeship. Full-time refers to 40 hours per week. Sometimes there may be variations in what is considered full-time in different countries. If your traineeship is less than 40 hours per week, an official justification from your traineeship placement is required.
- You must not have another EU grant during the same time period.
Students with a residence permit
Students studying in Sweden on a residence permit should check with the Swedish Migration Agency that participation in exchange studies or traineeship outside Sweden does not affect their residence permit. Please refer to the Swedish Migration Agency's website.
Visa to participate in an Erasmus traineeship
Depending on your nationality and the country where you will be conducting your traineeship you might need to apply for a visa/residence permit. Please make sure to properly check what is required in your case. In some instances you might need to show that you have been granted an Erasmus Traineeship Grant – if this should be the case for you: make sure to apply on time.
How long can I receive the grant?
You can receive an Erasmus grant for traineeships multiple times, but the following rules apply to how long and how many times you can apply for an Erasmus grant:
- Your traineeship must both commence and conclude within 1 July 2024 to 30 July 2025.
- Within the Erasmus programme, one month is considered as 30 days. You can receive an Erasmus grant for a maximum of 12 months (360 days) for each educational level (bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels). Students enrolled in long non-structured programme, such as the Medicine Programme, are allowed an Erasmus grant for a total of 24 months (720 days) during their entire education.
- For those who have previously participated in an exchange or traineeship with an Erasmus grant, whether through other institutions in Sweden or abroad, that period is also counted within the 12 months (360 days).
What does the grant consist of?
The grant does not provide full cost coverage. It is intended to cover additional costs during your traineeship. The size of the grant may vary from one year to the other.
The grant amount is calculated using the exchange rate of the European Central Bank on the date when Uppsala University received the funds from the EU Commission. Therefore, the exchange rate used may differ from the actual exchange rate at the time when the grant is paid out.
Grant levels
There are three grant level groups for the Erasmus grant for traineeships outside EU. If your traineeship is carried out in a country belonging to group 3, you will also automatically receive a travel support based on the distance to the traineeship country.

- San Marino
- Vatican
Grupp 2: 710 €/month

Inclusion support

In addition to the Erasmus Traineeship grant, you can apply for and receive two grants for travelling sustainably: the top-up for green travel and the Green Travel Grant.
Travel support
Students who are undertaking an Erasmus traineeship outside the EU within one of the countries in the grant level group 3 are entitled to a travel allowance.
Language course before starting the traineeship
You have the option to take a language course in the host country before your traineeship begins, and in that case, you may qualify for an additional grant.
The language course can be of any length in the language you will use during the traineeship or in the host country's local language. It is your responsibility to find an approved course, from your traineeship organisation or a higher education institution in the host country, in connection with your traineeship
The language course cannot be included in the minimum days for the traineeship. You will not receive a grant for any course fee or days between the language course and the traineeship. State the date of the language course in your application.
