We conduct research and education in a wide range of areas, from the origins of life on Earth, critical and rare metals and minerals, rock formation, landslides and volcanoes, weather and climate, water resources, natural disasters, to energy resources and sustainable development.
About the department
Through a merger of five previously independent institutions, we are now one of Europe's most comprehensive departments in Earth sciences.
Watch a film about the institution
How has the Earth and life on Earth evolved? How are we affected by weather, climate and natural disasters? How do we use our natural resources in a sustainable way?
Ask our experts
Our researchers can answer questions in geophysics, air, water and landscape science, mineralogy, petrology and tectonics, natural resources and sustainable development, palaeobiology and wind energy.
Sustainable development
We work with sustainable development in both our research and education. Sustainable development at the Department of Earth Sciences involves an interdisciplinary approach to the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals with respect to earth sciences, natural resources and society. Read more about how we work with sustainable development.
