The proposed research aims to develop a new physico-chemical investigation technique able to detect intermediates of electrocatalytic reactions. Electrochemical Induced Raman Spectroscopy, couples electrochemistry with Raman Spectroscopy to make a pump-probe technique. An electrochemical potential pulse is used as pump to create the reacting species on an electrocatalyst surface. The evolving species are analyzed with Raman Spectroscopy as the probe. This proposal describes the technical details of such a technique and how it is intended to be built, how the results can be analyzed and how it will be used to investigate an electrocatalytic reaction. This research intends to study the mechanism of the oxygen evolving reation catalyzed by Fe doped NiOOH which is one of the most debated electrocatalyst in the scientific community. The research will be conducted in the lab of Prof. Dau at Freie University Berlin for two years (out-going phase) and then continued in the lab of Prof. Messinger at Uppsala university for the remaining year (returning phase). In Prof. Dau’s lab the new technique will be build and the first tests will be conducted. The investigation on the Fe doped NiOOH will be carried out in Prof. Dau’s lab and will continue in Prof. Messinger’s lab where further development of the technique will be attempted.
