The present application describes a joint effort from industry, MAX IV and three universities (Uppsala, Linköping and KTH) to use MAX IV’s unique new infrastructure for breakthrough research in the development of more efficient and sustainable energy conversions devices, i.e. solar cells and batteries. A key parameter for rapid optimization of these systems is gaining an atomic level understanding of the operating device. For this purpose, the operando X-ray based spectroscopic tools at MAX IV are ideal. In the project MAX IV will be used as a hub for collaborations between academia and industry to address a set of interconnected research topics that are inspired by the needs defined by industrial partners, while at the same time allow training of a new generation of users of this large-scale infrastructure. The project organization includes internationally established teams integrated in applied energy research and in the development and use of large-scale facilities. The project will combine workshop/courses, methodology development, collaborations at beamtimes, analysis of structure function relationships and device development. An important part of the project is to introduce, use and upgrade an array of synchrotron-based spectroscopic tools at MAX IV to enhance the accessibility of these tools to new academic and industrial users. The applied goal will be to enable companies to deliver ultra-performance applications through measuring prototype-devices in operation.
