The international research community and society as a whole is currently preoccupied with trying to understand the consequences of technological change in the form of, e.g., industrial robots, digitalization and artificial intelligence on labor market outcomes, economic inequality and optimal policy design. This research program brings together some of Sweden’s most prominent researchers in the field who will work together with with top international scholars to push our understanding of the labor market impact of these ongoing technological advances much further. The core of the program uses state-of-the-art empirical techniques and very detailed Swedish register data on firm technology and workers’ skills and traits to study the impact of technological change of firms and workers in much greater depth than has previously been possible. In addition, the program contains satellite packages aimed at understanding how the insights from the core analysis within the program can be mapped into optimal policy responses, how they relate to low skilled employment, gender equality, and democracy. In order to ensure that results and analyses are accurate and that insights are applied without delay, the research group aims to execute top-level research alongside frequent interactions with stakeholders such as social partners, government agencies and policy makers.
