Recent reports on cyber-attacks, such as Stuxnet, have shown their devastating consequences on digitally controlled systems supporting modern societies. It is therefore of the utmost importance for control systems to be able to early detect and mitigate malicious cyber-attacks, which aim at having a significant impact on the system while remaining undetected. Unfortunately, existing techniques in control theory consider impact and detectability separately, and thus fail to accurately tackle cyber-attacks.This project shall develop the science needed to address cybersecurity problems in control systems, structured along these actions: to formulate novel sensitivity metrics that jointly consider the impact and detectability of attacks as optimal control problems; to analyze the metrics through dissipative systems theory; and to apply the metrics to the design of anomaly detectors and controllers for improved cybersecurity through linear matrix inequalities. I am fortunate to have one of the first PhD thesis worldwide on cybersecurity of control systems, directly after which I secured a highly competitive tenure-track position at TU Delft. Following the change, due to family reasons, to my present and highly competitive tenure-track position, I seek to expand my role as a leading researcher in cybersecurity of control systems. This project will allow me to consolidate my research group by hiring two PhDs, fund my own research, and further expand my network of collaborators.
