NBIS enables world-class life science by providing expert knowledge, creative data integration, advanced training, efficient data publication and access to high-performance data and analysis methods. NBIS coordinates bioinformatics support within Sweden and makes bioinformatics easily accessible for life science researchers. We provide advanced user support to meet the three major scientific challenges: a) Continuous technical scale-up providing unprecedented amount of heterogeneous omics data, b) Breakthrough of system-level analyses in biomedical research, c) Large-scale omics making a major leap into translational research and diagnostics. Usage of NBIS has increased considerably every year from 2011, reflecting the growing demand for bioinformatics analyses. This at the same time as increasingly more research groups are recruiting and training their own bioinformatics expertise. We meet this growing demand by actions along the three lines: a) increased consultancy to help users, b) increased training activities, c) provision of user friendly tools and databases enabling researchers to perform more bioinformatics analyses on their own.Furthermore, NBIS forms the Swedish contact point to the Elixir, providing life-science researchers access to necessary data and tools, and enabling data storage and handling more cost-efficient. Sweden has contributed to Elixir with the Human Protein Atlas, and through EU-funding further activities are added.
