The scientific goal of Biobank Sweden (BIS) is to provide efficient, coordinated and sustainable use of biobank samples and associated healthcare and molecular analysis data as the basis for internationally leading research using the most advanced analysis technologies. The proposed infrastructure is a consortium of all Swedish universities with medical faculties (Universities of Umeå, Uppsala, Örebro, Linköping, Göteborg, Lund and the Karolinska Institute) and their respective healthcare providers (Västerbottens läns landsting, Region Uppsala, Region Örebro län, Region Östergötland, Västra Götalandsregionen, Region Skåne and Stockholms läns landsting). The consortium will be governed by an Overarching Agreement between the partners, a Consortium Agreement relating to the VR funding and local collaboration agreements. The infrastructure will have a start-up phase (2018-2019) where BIS demonstrates national collaboration at the strategic and operational level. A key transformation during the start-up phase is to increase formal and operational integration of university biobanks and their healthcare regional counterparts. The infrastructure consists of the following operational modules:1. Organization and management 2. Administrative, legal and ethical support3. Integration in joint local biobank facilities4. National integration5. International integration6. Biobank Service7. IT development, implementation and support8. Healthcare integrated biobanking
