Our future society will encounter a big shift toward artificial intelligence-based, automated machines through networks as the 4th industrial revolution. Infrastructures in our daily life of all categories in intelligent machine-integrated society will need more occasions of physical and perceptual interactions between machines and humans, or environments. For providing essential functionality to better human- and environment-friendly interactions, machines need to be softer, smarter and safer with intelligent soft interfaces. For the intelligent soft interfaces in soft robotics and wearable systems, active soft interfaces are required, which can give ergonomic interactions. Novel smart soft materials are proposed as a promising way for active soft interfaces, and thus, adaptable, reconfigurable and multifunctional. Liquid-embedded elastomers will be structured with various designs for tuning material properties, which will provide many practical solutions by understanding the harmony of liquids and elastomers. Theoretical modelling, designing, processing and fabricating soft materials and soft systems will be conducted. This project will have a high impact on soft technology applicable to robotics, electronics and biomedical engineering with practical solutions of novel soft materials and systems. This project for three years will open great opportunity to lead soft technology at Harvard University, having strong experts and the best research environment.
