The alarming increase in the numbers of infections by multidrug-resistant Gramnegativepathogens in the EU calls for new strategies and solutions to addressbacterial resistance mechanisms. In response to a call from the Goethe UniversityFrankfurt and the University of Birmingham, UK, researchers from both institutionsheld a 2-day workshop in March 2016 with the aim of designing new strategies andsolutions to drug resistance mechanisms. This workshop identified that there is anunmet need for a new oral agent active against multi-drug resistantEnterobacteriaceae causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) including in the elderly. Tofurther address the question of feasibility of such a research proposal, we propose anew network group including researchers from the Birmingham workshop plusadditional experts with skills in medical microbiology, pharmacokinetics, in vivomodels, and drug discovery/development in industry. We will hold a 1-day conferenceand invite key experts in the treatment of UTIs and impact of AMR, properties of thedrug nitrofurantoin (medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics and pharmacology) andnitrofurantoin resistance, to cover experience from ‘bench to bedside’. The conferencewill be followed up by a 1-day meeting of the core working group to discuss thestrengths and weaknesses of the planned approach, the research strategy, itspotential outcome and timeline. The overall objective is to draft a proposal to besubmitted for a colla
