The conference "Critical dietetics: Food and eating beyond calories" will be organised by the Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics of the Uppsala University, on 25th of April 2017, to introduce critical dietetics in Sweden as a new research field. Critical dietetics includes an understanding of food and health from more perspectives than just the medical or nutritional. Based on critical social theory it examines practices of dietetics, clinical research, and "dietary trends." The research approach has emerged among scientists and clinical dietitians in Canada and Australia as a reaction to the perspective that currently dominates our society, health care and nutrition research. It is a reaction to the ignorance of important aspects of food and eating, that the food´s social, cultural and symbolic significance is reduced at the expense of its nutritional value. It is also about demonstrating and questioning how the reductionist approach to eating is a social and political construction. In Sweden, many researchers in different disciplines (from ethnology to biochemistry) are dedicated today to the study of food and eating from different perspectives, the establishment of critical dietetics as a comprehensive approach will give the opportunity for new networks and interdisciplinary constellations among these researchers. So there are great opportunities to take advantage of this conference to coordinate the expertise that already exists in this area in Sweden.
