This project is about older people?s (dis)engagement with digital technologies and the potential implications it might have on their understandings of aging and old age. The main purpose is to explore the understandings and experiences of digital technologies, particularly the social media. Older people are often described and represented as rather homogenous group, who run potential risks of remaining excluded from the increasingly digitalized societies. Since the main focus is to understand the subjective experiences and understandings, the project employs a qualitative design with positioning theory as the main theoretical framework. Method-wise it employs focus group interviews with 30-50 older (65+) adults divided into four groups of ?non-users? and ?narrow users? (two groups each). The goal is to generate more knowledge about the diversity of forms and contexts of (dis)engagement with digital technologies and whether understandings of these technologies are informed by understandings of aging and old age. By departing from four groups of ?non-users?, the project will contribute to the scholarly research on non-usage not as a problem to be corrected but rather as a spectrum. The opportunity to work with top-class media and communication scholars specialising in different aspects of digitalisation, such as social media, participation and creativity will provide a chance to develop a theoretically stimulating and empirically rich results.
