This qualitative study contributes to knowledge about men´s identity negotiations and self-worth protection strategies in higher education (HE) in Sweden and England, focussing on highly competitive contexts. It explores how constructions of masculinity and student identities inform strategies for coping with risks of academic failure. Education revolves largely around performance and success; hence, success is important for a student?s self-image and self-worth. The approach employed is constructionist grounded theory; theoretical frameworks are Social identity theory, and theories of self-worth, gender and achievement. The focus is three elite undergraduate programmes: Medicine, Law and Engineering. Data are generated by: observations; focus group interviews (40); and individual interviews (ca 200) with students, student representatives, study advisers, lecturers and directors of studies.
