Tidsperiod: 2014-01-01 till 2016-12-31
Budget: 3 150 000 SEK
With the project "Burkas and Baguettes: Secularism, the Far-right, and Islam in Contemporary France" I aim to enquire into recent changes in French secularist (la laïcité) and liberal discourse by analyzing the ostentatious intersections between the political mainstream´s and the far-right´s discourse(s) on secularism. Main focus of the analysis is placed on the secularist and ultra-nationalist organization Riposte Laïque (Secular Resistance) and the far-right political party Front National. The material will be discussed in relation to similar developments in Europe. Data will be gathered through fieldwork and readings of publications, public interventions and the media. Methodologically, the fieldwork section of the analysis leans toward political ethnology and the textual material will be analyzed using foucaultian discourse analysis. The project is of great importance since it will highlight and problematize intersections between mainstream political speech and the far-right in France and how liberal discourse is used for illiberal purposes. Analyzing these developments are crucial for understanding future developments of European identity politics. The hosting department, CHERPA at Sciences Po Aix, gathers some of France´s leading critical scholars on secularism and will make out an unmatched base for collegial work and critical reflection on my research.
