In the past, New Testament scholars typically portrayed Judaism in overtly negative terms and Jesus as distant from his Jewish context. Such reconstructions were largely due to a strong Christian agenda combined with an anti-Jewish bias. In the post-holocaust era this picture has fortunately changed and today Jesus is usually presented as a Jewish historical person. Still, according to the vast majority of New Testament scholars Jesus was opposed to one area of Jewish life, namely the purity laws. The issue is important. If Jesus disregarded purity concerns-a basic facet of Jewish life in antiquity-he was also partly removed from his Jewish milieu. What was Jesus´ attitude towards purity laws? I will examine this question by analyzing Jesus´ message and actions related to purity in the context of his Jewish cultural milieu. Through close textual analyses, examinations of archaeological rapports, and utilizing perspectives from the social sciences, I will evaluate whether Jesus´ attitude towards purity falls within the range of acceptable norms of early Judaism. My combined expertise in early Judaism, the Dead Sea Scrolls in particular, and the New Testament makes me exceptionally qualified to undertake a full range investigation into Jesus´ attitude to purity. My research will greatly contribute our understanding of the historical Jesus and the function of purity laws within the Jewish society. Hopefully, my results will also have an impact on the wider field of theology.
