More than thirty years ago a result derived in the context of superspace supergravity indicated that even the most promising supergravity candidate had problems when viewed as a model for quantum gravity [1]. This led to a large number of practitioners turning to string theory instead. However, it also led to an interesting development in trying to understand and refine the results in [1]. Lately this development has assumed a new importance due to the impressive results in quantum gravity loop calculations using the methods of Bern, Dixon, Kosower et.al. It is a remarkable fact that the results of [1] still stand out as the most robust limit for the onset of divergences in supergravity. We now know how supergravity emerges as a low energy limit of superstring theory, and string theory is a finite quantum theory of gravity almost by construction. Many researchers argue that it ise very unlikely that its low energy limit (supergravity) is also finite and for this reason believe in that the possible counterterms discussed in [1] will have non zero coefficients in a quantum calculation. But the issue is not yet settled. This meeting will bring together a large number of the contributors to the superspace development of the above issues as well as to related questions involving the new and beautiful mathematics developed under way.
