The planned conference ´Critique, Democracy and Philosophy in 21st Century Information Society: Towards Critical Theories of Social Media´ should take place on May 2-4, 2012, at Uppsala University. The task is to provide a forum for the discussion of theories, approaches, foundations and ethics relating to the implications of social media (Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube, WIkiLeaks, Wikipedia, etc) for critique, democracy, politics and philosophy in 21st century information society. Recent discussions about WikiLeaks, filesharing (PirateBay, etc); the role of Twitter, YouTube and Facebook in rebellions and conflicts in Northern Africa, privacy and surveillance on Facebook, Google, etc show the relevance of the conference. The web page for the conference will be hosted at http://www.im.uu.se. International and Swedish experts from the fields of Media and Communication Studies, Information Ethics, Information Society Studies and Internet Studies will be invited to discuss contemporary aspects of communication power in the information society. The conference´s topic and the invitation of renowned speakers will attract the interest of the Swedish and international academic public and advance interdisciplinary knowledge generation and dissemination. The conference will be liked to the research network/conference series ´ICTs and Society´ for enabling an interdisciplinary dialogue.
