About 70% of the Earth?s surface is covered by oceans, but still knowledge about many aspects of air-sea interaction is lacking. Processes over sea is crucial in a number of application ranging from weather and wave prediction, climate change, climate modelling, offshore wind energy, wave energy, marine ecosystems, dispersion and deposition of pollutants etc. Research programs in climate as well as air pollution have expressed a need for global air-sea flux estimates with high temporal and spatial resolution. The application aims at making the existing marine micrometeorological field station Östergarnsholm an openly available research platform for national as well as international research group. The site is unique since it is a land-based site (with the advantage of data with high resolution in time, no problems of motion or flow distortion of a ship), which is relatively easy to access. Still, it has been shown by several studies to well represent marine conditions for the undisturbed wind directions. The applicants have ongoing or recently started measurement of importance for air-sea gas exchange, marine aerosols and biogeochemical modelling and we plan to expand the potential use also to other interested collaborators with the focus on remote sensing applications, climate modelling, and integrated estimates of surface GHG exchange.
