This research project represents novel analytical possibilities in the translational field between analytical chemistry and neurochemistry, including fundamental aspects of sample preparation, liquid separation and mass spectrometric detection for analysis of complex biological samples. One intriguing area of use for our developed procedures is the screening of changes in the protein expression profile of lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients suffering from various neurological disorders, with the final goal to identify disease specific protein biomarkers with clinical implications. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis are two examples of devastating incurable disorders. There is currently no available diagnostic test to predict disease course and prognosis in individual patients. Therefore, identification of biomarkers that can differentiate and predict severity of disease is of great importance for both patients and caregivers. I have deliberately focused on the novel technologies that we have developed in collaboration with external groups as a complement to our own in-house facilities. We need to establish these unique technologies in Uppsala and further develop these in collaboration with renowned laboratories in USA. As can be seen from our latest publications and based on the impact those papers have made, we have become a world leading consortium for cerebrospinal fluid diagnostics.
