Experimentell och matematisk analysis av genetiska och farmakologiska systemstörningar i cancer

One of the central problems of cancer systems biology is to understand the complex molecular changes of cancerous cells and tissues, and use this understanding to support the development of new targeted therapies. Using the common brain tumor glioblastoma as our primary biological and medical focus, we aim to explore the following two hypotheses:1. The combined or separate effect of genetic aberrations or pharmaceutical compounds on cancer cells can be understood and predicted by computer models.2. Such system-scale models, in turn, are applicable to the discovery of disease genes, the development of prognostic biomarkers and the design of personalized combination therapies. The applicant will lead a project that continues to develop the computational framework for regulatory analysis of regulation in cancer cells, and proceeds to experimental work in the context of a carefully chosen model problem based on five genetically diverse glioblastoma cell lines. The project represents the first systematic experimental-theoretical study of multi-target perturbation in complex systems relevant to human biology, and aims to make a contribution towards enhanced cancer therapies.
