Entry requirements
120 credits in science/engineering, of which at least 60 credits in electrical engineering. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- dimension a permanently magnetized synchronous motor with high efficiency using computer-based aids,
- perform simple analytical design calculations for a motor based on Maxwell's equations and do calculations with different poles,
- vary and optimize the design of the magnetic circuit in a motor,
- suggest changes in the magnetic, electrical, mechanical or thermal design of an electric motor and explain the implications,
- explain what active field weakening means and why it is used,
- critically analyse different types of electric motors function and innovative motor designs.
Content
Different types of electric motors for electric propulsion systems. Design of permanent magnet synchronous motors. Magnetic and magnetically coupled circuits. Principles of electromechanical energy conversion. Design of the synchronous motor. Electrical and magnetic material parameters. Losses, normal operation, faults and transients in the electric motor. Active field weakening, magnet working curve and risk of demagnetization of magnets. Mechanical design of an electric motor and cooling system. Motor design with Finite Element Method (FEM). Alternative and innovative motor types. Basic principles of motor control, including start up and change of direction of rotation..
Instruction
Lectures, tutorials and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written exam and laboratory work.
If there are special reasons for doing so, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination method of assessment and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
