Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is advanced knowledge about protein production on different scales, especially large-scale production, in the biotechnology industry.

After completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Describe from start to finish the entire process of of protein production on different scales, including large-scale industrial production, that fulfils the quality requirements from both industry and regulations from governmental agencies (GLP,GMP)
  • Use a bioreactor in different ways to produce proteins
  • Perform of protein purification with regard to molecular properties and demands placed on product purity
  • Design purification methods for protiens with respect to starting material and production scale
  • Master and rationally select different methods for characterisation of proteins, with consideration to product requirements
  • Critically examine large scale industrial protein production processesand present the results orally.

Content

Cell culturing bioreactors. Preparative scale protein purification and analysis . Protein characterisation by modern bioanalytical tools. GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). Laws and regulations.Examination of large scale industrial protein production processes. Site visit at a biotechnology company.

Instruction

Instructions are in the form of lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals and a group assignment with oral presentations. Communication training within selected profile areas is integrated with the course components.

Assessment

A written test at the end of the course, and/or during the course, corresponding to 5 credits. Laboratory practicals and demonstrations, oral and written presentations of laboratory reports, and oral presentationof the group assignment t correspond to 5 credits in total. The final grade represents a weighted total of these components.

Other directives

Cannot be counted towards the degree together with 1MB572 Protein biotechnology I, 1MB573 Protein biotechnology II, 1KB761 Protein biotechnology and 1KB762 Protein biotechnology.
