Speech and Language Pathology

The subject of speech and language pathology encompasses studies of the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of voice, speech, language, and swallowing disorders.

Research within the field aims to: extend our knowledge of what causes and characterises functional disabilities, increase the reliability of methods of assessment and diagnosis and to evaluate intervention effectiveness.

The subject also includes the study of how such disorders affect the individual's quality of life and the opportunities available to him or her to participate in activities and engage with his or her surroundings in the form of family, school, the public sphere and the workplace.

Speech and language pathology is an interdisciplinary field of study that builds on knowledge from the scientific domains of linguistics, phonetics, psychology, medicine and technology.
