Game Design

Game design is about creating interactive experiences for players with means that are specific to the medium of games. First and foremost, this includes the rules and mechanics of the game, how the elements of a game system connect to each other in "if-then" relationships and contribute to a coherent experience goal.

In a bigger sense, game design integrates game structures (through rules and mechanics that can be applied to game levels) with narrative elements – what the game is about on its thematic, fictional level – and the audio-visual representation.

Creating games on any platform – digital or non-digital – is often a multi-disciplinary effort. It involves game designers, graphics artists, sound designers, writers and, in the case of digital games, programming. Since the development of games is complex and has many moving parts and requires coordination of teams over sometimes substantial timeframes, our subject of game design also includes project management as one area of specialisation
