Swedish Twin Registry (STR)

The Swedish Twin Registry (STR) is a national infrastructure in the form of a research database that collects information on the lifestyle, behaviours, environmental risk factors, diagnoses and health examination results of Swedish-born twins.

The aim of STR is to enable population-based, epidemiological and molecular studies of genetic and environmental factors in medical and mental health, lifestyle and behaviour. All twins born in the country are invited and asked to complete questionnaires and provide DNA. STR has been in existence since the 1960s, includes twins born from 1886 onwards, and is the largest registry of its kind in the world.

Karolinska Institutet serves as the host of STR, and the other partner universities are Uppsala University, University of Gothenburg, Umeå University, Lund University, Linköping University, Örebro University, Jönköping University, Mid Sweden University and the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences.

The contact persons at Uppsala University are Professor Mia Wadelius and Professor Tove Fall at the Department of Medical Sciences.
