European X-ray Free Electron Laser (EU-XFEL)

The European X-Ray Free Electron Laser (EU-XFEL) is a free-electron laser facility adjacent to the DESY research centre in Hamburg. Since 2009, Sweden has been a member of the German company XFEL GmbH, which is responsible for the construction and operation of the facility. The first experimental stations at EU-XFEL began operations in 2017, and construction will continue in future years to enable the facility to reach its full potential.

The facility opens up new opportunities for research in materials science, structural biology and femtosecond chemistry. Several Swedish research teams actively participate in the construction of EU-XFEL.

The Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI) funds this research infrastructure, which the Swedish Research Council considers to be in the national interest.
