European Spallation Source (ESS)
The European Spallation Source (ESS) currently being constructed will become a European multi-disciplinary neutron scattering research facility using the world’s most powerful neutron source. Sweden and Denmark serve as host countries for ESS. At ESS, researchers will study different types of material at the atomic and molecular level and processes related to the materials. They can examine the molecular structure of a material, which in turn is directly linked to its physical or chemical properties. Fields that can benefit from the facility include medicine and health, climate and transport, energy and the environment, food, and cultural heritage. Construction of the facility began in September 2014, and ESS is projected to available to users by 2025.
Uppsala University has the Centre for Neutron Scattering, which promotes collaboration in the development and use of neutron scattering in all of the University’s fields of research.
The Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI) funds this research infrastructure, which the Swedish Research Council considers to be in the national interest.
