The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) advances knowledge of the living world by studying all levels from molecules to whole organisms. EMBL, based in Heidelberg, is an infrastructure with activities spread over six sites across Europe:

  • EMBL Heidelberg, Germany – electron microscopy and “omics” platforms
  • EMBL-EBI Hinxton, UK – bioinformatics
  • EMBL Hamburg, Germany – infection biology, beamlines for structural biology
  • EMBL/ESRF Grenoble, France – structural biology
  • EMBL Rome, Italy – epigenetics and neurobiology
  • EMBL Barcelona, Spain – tissue biology and medical modelling

EMBL also maintains a Nordic network for molecular medicine, with one of the nodes located in Umeå (MIMS).
