The four year project aims to facilitate Sweden’s transition to a 100% renewable energy system by defining required targets and processes. The temperature and equity framing of the Paris Agreement will be calculated into an energy-only carbon budget range (CO2 only) for Sweden. In the next step the project will calculate regional carbon budgets together with county boards. The aim is to define realistic targets facilitating rapid and deep reductions in energy use and emissions. As a last step the project will together with collaborating counties reshape Sweden’s existing low-carbon objectives and programmes, aligning them with an explicit and quantitatively-robust interpretation of the Paris temperature commitments of 1.5°C and 2°C. The analysis will provide an integrated perspective of both how Sweden is impacted by global developments in the energy sector, but also the potential for Sweden to lead the way in engendering deep and rapid reduction of emissions.
