Elly Griffiths is giving this year’s Adam Helms Lecture
Each year, Uppsala University and the Swedish Publishers’ Association arrange a lecture in memory of the publisher Adam Helms. This year’s lecture will be given by the internationally renown British crime novelist Elly Griffiths on 16 September 2021. The lecture will be broadcast live online, but the hope is also to be able to allow a smaller audience at the Humanities Theatre in Uppsala.
This year’s speaker in memory of the publisher Adam Helms will be the British novelist Domenica de Rosa, best known by her pseudonym Elly Griffiths. Her crime series about forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway is an international success, including in Sweden. Griffiths has received the Mary Higgins Clark Award and CWA Dagger in Library Award for her writing. She has a background in the publishing world and worked as a children’s literature editor at HarperCollins before her debut as an author.
The publisher Adam Helms was an innovative spirit within marketing in the book industry and a pioneer within international co-productions between publishers. In the early 1940s, Helms and his Swedish wife, Greta Nilsson, revolutionised the Swedish book club system through Bokklubben Svalan. At his death in 1980, he left the Swedish Publishers’ Association an extensive collection of books about book marketing, book publishers and book selling. Through a donation, this collection is now a part of Uppsala University Library: Adam Helms Collection of Books in the History of Publishing and Bookselling.

The Adam Helms Lecture will take place on 16 September 2021, starting at 17:00. The lecture will be in English and be broadcast live online, but the hope is also to be able to allow a smaller audience at the Humanities Theatre in Uppsala.
