Short presentation
Docent in English Literature with an interest in research data practices, the ideology of world-building, and the social commentary of urban fantasy.
Biography
Stefan Ekman is docent (approx. Dr. habil./Assoc. Prof.) in English literature, and has an MSc in economics with a focus on development and environment. His doctoral thesis examines the function of environments in fantasy literature, and he has just finished
Urban Fantasy: Exploring Modernity through Magic, a monograph on the role of social commentary in the urban fantasy genre (Lever Press, scheduled for 2024). He has also developed analytical approaches to critical world-building.
He is a former head (2008-14) of the Fantasy Literature Division of the International Conference of the Fantastic in the Arts. His book
Here Be Dragons: Exploring Fantasy Maps and Settings (Wesleyan UP, 2013) was finalist for the Locus Award (Non-Fiction) in 2014, and for the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award (Myth and Fantasy Studies) in 2016. He is a member of the Editorial Board of
Fafnir - Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research and runs the Fantasy Online Research Seminar (FORS).

Member of the CAPTURE project, exploring the use and practices concerning paradata primarily in archaeological research.
