Register of vice-chancellors
The register of Uppsala University vice-chancellors commences in 1626, the year in which charters were established for Uppsala University. These charters included stipulations regarding the appointment of vice-chancellors.
Initially the vice-chancellorship rotated among the University’s professors, and the term of office was a single semester. The rotation system and its brief terms of office meant that the list of vice-chancellors for the following 200 years comprised most full professors at the academy during this period. Some even served multiple terms. Carl Linnaeus, for one, was vice-chancellor of Uppsala University as many as three times.
However, in 1877 new statutes took force. As of January 1, 1877, the vice-chancellor was elected to the office as a trustee of the University and the state authorities.
