Career

Young man and young woman looking to the future.

After your studies, it's time to graduate and think about your next steps. Is it time to look for a job, start your own business or perhaps get into research? The department will support you throughout your studies. Whether you are studying at Bachelor's or Master's level, we will help you take the next step in your career.

The demand for computer and IT skills is high in Sweden and is expected to increase. As a student in our programmes, you have good opportunities for well-paid jobs in areas such as AI, telecom, media, entertainment and healthcare. You can also work in industry, government agencies and organisations, both nationally and internationally, or pursue a career in research.

Bachelor’s Programme in Computer Science

Our Bachelor's Programme in Computer Science attracts students from all over Sweden. The programme gives you great opportunities for work where computer science skills are required, both in the private and public sectors. The software industry is the dominant field and many of our alumni (former students) work as system developers or programmers. Other common occupations include data scientist, IT consultant, work in data and cyber security, and in the banking and finance sectors.

As a data scientist, it is easy for you to get a job right after graduation. Within 6 months of graduation, nine out of ten students had found a job where their academic education was relevant. Half of the students had already been offered employment during their studies.

After your Bachelor's degree, you can broaden and deepen your knowledge by continuing in one of our two-year Master's programmes.

Here is a list of positions and companies where some of our alumni work. The majority of alumni are employed by companies and organisations, but it is also common for them to work as consultants or to be self-employed:

A survey of our alumni (former students) shows that the programmes greatly prepare them for their current careers and jobs and they highly recommend the programme to others.

For students, the programme offers interesting and stimulating workshops and lectures. In the spring semester, an alumni and student day is organised where former students give lectures on their experiences from the programmes, job search and work in industry or research. For 2024, the Alumni Day will take place on 24 April. You can also join a LinkedIn group to keep in touch with other students and alumni from your programme.

There are many routes to your first job after graduation. According to our alumni from both Bachelor's and Master's programmes, the majority get their first job in one of three ways:

  • Doing a thesis at a company often leads straight to employment.
  • Choosing courses within the programme that are relevant and provide specialised knowledge in a specific field makes you attractive to employers.
  • The personal network you build up through contacts with companies, teachers and other students during the programme often leads to the first job.

If you are a Bachelor's student and interested in continuing your studies at master's level, TekNat organises a Master's Fair every year in March in the spring semester.

In November in the autumn semester, the Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students (UTN) arranges Utnarm for all students at the Ångström Laboratory; a job fair where you meet over a hundred different companies and organisations.

The Faculty's career pages provide tips and information on how to plan your future. You can also get tips about the labour market, contacts and how to apply for a job, internship or traineeship.

The study and career counsellors at the Faculty of Science and Technology (TekNat) organise workshops in both Swedish and English where you can learn how to:

  • Improve your study technique.
  • Deal with procrastination.
  • Write a strong CV and cover letter.
  • Create a strong LinkedIn profile.
  • Find your way in the Swedish labour market.
  • Succeed at job interviews.
  • Plan your future career.
  • Find out what it's like to study in Sweden.
  • Find an attractive job.
